High Dynamic Range Photography

December 25th, 2008

High dynamic range (HDR) photography has been around for many years.  Lately with the explosion of photography along with being able to edit photography with Photoshop, people have been producing more HDR imagery than ever before.

What is HDR? The theory behind HDR is that it tries to accurately represent the wide range difference in tonal properties in an image from bright highlights to dark shadows.  In producing HDR imagery, the user would create a composite of multiple exposures and combine these layers in a way to accurately represent the true tonalities of the image.  It was difficult to do in the past however with Photoshop and point and shoot cameras, this is easily accomplished.  HDR imagery when done correctly makes for beautiful images that would one normally see with their own eyes.

Stock Photography

November 24th, 2008

The market for stock photography has been increasing lately.  Many pro photographers are finding that they can make some income by selling their images on stock photography websites.  Stock photography websites are popping up on the internet fairly often.  The major players in the stock photography market are iStock Photo, Getty Images, Corbis to name a few.  Stock prices range from a dollar or so to several hundred dollars depending on the rights that come with the image.  For instance, iStock Photo charges as little as a dollar for small images and can range upwards.  Getty Images charges a fairly higher amount because most of the images are professional images with lots of rights associated with them.

Stock imagery however can be cumbersome to search.  There really isn’t a great way to search through the tons and tons of photos on these websites.  These websites have searches based on keywords and it is up to you to search through each one photo one by one.  There are litterally millions of photos out there and to find the right photo may take some work.

Textures

October 24th, 2008

The use of textures in photography as well as web design is becoming increasingly more popular.  Using textures adds to the overall look of a webpage.  The textures are very easy to integrate into a webdesign and into photography.  In photography the textures are used to provide a more surreal look to the photo.  You can added texture to make a photo look like an old photo with lots of scratches on it or you can make a photo look more artsy.  In web design, the use of textures adds more depth to the webpage.  Instead of a static one color design, the webpage is more appealing to the eye.

Today textures are very common and photographers all over are willing to share their textures.  You can also easily take your own photos of textures.  You can simply take around a small point and shoot camera and take pictures of textures in the environment that appeals to you.  This is pretty much what all textures are.  They are not usually randomly generated by computer.
